“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.” — James 1:17 (ESV)
In our high-tech world, we often miss the simple things around us such as birds chirping, the warmth of the sun, the chill of a breeze, a butterfly dancing near the car, or a neighbor’s smile. But true gratitude looks upward. It remembers that every gift points to the Giver.
The Giver blessed me with Sammie, a loyal German Shepherd ten years ago, a gift I never expected, yet one that changed my life. This past May, she passed away from what some call the “silent dog killer.” In her final days, she simply wanted to sit outside and look up. I would stand beside her, leash in hand, and look up too. Those moments reminded me that gratitude isn’t just about noticing what’s around us; it’s about lifting our eyes to the One who gives peace even in loss.
Gratitude shifts our gaze from what’s in our hands to the One who holds us steady when everything else changes.
This week, take time to step away from your screens and look around. Notice the vibrant colors of the falling leaves, the rustle beneath your feet, the chatter of squirrels, the song of birds, the glow of the moon, and the brightness of the stars.
Feel the coolness of freshly fallen snow, watch the gentle flutter of snowflakes, and remember to follow the lead of how Sammie loved to sit in the quiet stillness of winter, her nose lifted toward the sky.
And when you notice a smile, a meal, or a moment of calm, lift your eyes and say, “Thank You, Lord.” Let every moment of thankfulness become an act of worship, not just appreciation.
Peace grows when your eyes find the Giver, not just the gift.
With grace and love
